Margrethe kog – Hinterland
Margrethe Kog – Hinterland (2020).
Hinterland in the Wadden Sea. On the Danish–German border of the West Coast. This photograph shows structures of the Wadden Sea immediately behind the first layer of dike systems protecting the hinterland from the North Sea. Functional interventions based on the construction of safety measures, production areas, and land reclamation projects. There is nothing here that is original 'nature', although it is part of the Danish heritage for its cultural landscape qualities.
The marsh is an example of two distinct systems coming together in a mutual cultural and natural exchange of sediments. Nourishment is added from sediments from the sea, which provides a breeding ground for wildlife and organisms. At the same time, it is necessary to construct fascines, dike structures, and dams that can maintain the production areas and residential structures on which people depend. Over time, these sedimentation layers become entangled and the boundaries between them blur. The two systems work into each other and against each other in different ways and over several timespans.
